Day 6 (September 19, 2025): Oban

 H-Islands

(by Abigail, Reva and Charlotte)

After the long bus ride yesterday, most of us slept long and very well, glad about the late meet-up at ten. Our first morning in Oban was spent eating breakfast together, talking about our new rooms and discussing what we had found at the stores.

At about ten thirty we left for Dunollie Castle, which was a beautiful half-an-hour walk along the seaside and through light forest. Dunollie Castle itself was a spectacular ruin with a marvellous view over the sea and the various islands around Oban. It was hard to imagine how people could have lived there some hundreds of years ago. After a quick visit paid to the adjacent museum, however, most of our questions were answered.

To reward ourselves for all the hard thinking, we ate lunch and some of us enjoyed a hot chocolate (very yummy).

After everybody met up again, it was time for our next stop: the beach!!! We had a great time reliving our favourite childhood activities: running all over the sand, collecting seashells and stomping around in the water. Those who had luckily chosen to wear wellies found themselves fascinated by squelching about and sinking down a few centimetres in the wet sand. Ms Hänggi talked to us about the volcanic rocks we were standing on and about the shiny seashells we had picked up everywhere. After climbing back over the gate (we promise that was totally legal) everyone walked back to the hostel, once again taking in the scenic landscape.

But for some the best was yet to come… A few brave souls dressed up in their swimsuits and ventured out to the sea. The cold wind was biting, and teeth were chattering but there was a lot of laughter and in the end, everyone had successfully swum around at least for a little while. What had started as a fun team activity quickly became a competitive race for the showers (cold btw).

The rest of the afternoon was spent individually by playing games, checking out the town and taking naps. Some even did their laundry #responsibleadults.

The evening was rounded off by a shared dinner in an Italian restaurant, but we didn’t stay too long because of the early start the next day. It was a fun atmosphere and the food was enjoyable. Overall today was a complete success.

Ciaooo ;)
