Goodbye Scotland

A Fond Farewell from Scotland (by Jeanette Hänggi and Bojana Ruf) As we sit down to write this final entry of our two-week adventure in Scotland, we find ourselves smiling at how full these days have been. The landscapes, the history, the rocks, the small moments of discovery – they’ve all come together to create an experience none of us will soon forget. It feels almost impossible to capture everything in words, but perhaps that is part of the magic of travel: some memories are best held in the heart. Still, before we close this chapter, let’s take one more look back at the moments that made this trip so special. One of the great privileges of being a teacher is seeing the world not just through your own eyes, but through the eyes of your students. Every castle, every hike, every ferry ride became richer because of the curiosity and excitement this group brought along. We weren’t just visitors; we were explorers together. We will probably all remember that moment in North Berwick when...

Day 13 (September 26, 2025): Edinburgh

The Last Scottish Hurrah (by Rain, Luzie and Ffion) Today, as we woke up a bit earlier than yesterday, all of us had a semi unpleasant but also good feeling of excitement. Today marks our last day in Scotland - tomorrow at this time we will be sitting in the almost comfortable seats of the UK trains, watching as the landscape shifts from Scotland to England. To begin our day, we all had breakfast in the apartments and met at 9AM in the lobby. After Ms. Ruf’s announcement of not being able to be late on the following day, we made our way to Calton Hill once more (we were there before on our first day in Edinburgh). We endured the steep hill whilst trying not to break our ankles on the old and used pavement. Out of breath after our short “hike”, the first group of the day presented the history and beautiful buildings and monuments on top of the hill, where we learned that the beneficiaries of the National Monument ran out of money and therefore, it still stands uncompleted atop the hill....

Day 12 (September 25, 2025): Edinburgh

National Museum of Scotland  ( by Lina, Maryam and Kweenie) The morning started with a visit to the National Museum of Scotland here in Edinburgh. Once inside, we had time to walk around on our own while completing a small task. The museum had a lot to offer; from exhibits on Scottish history to science and technology. One of the highlights was definitely Dolly the sheep, the world’s first cloned mammal created in 1996 by scientists in Edinburgh. She was cloned from a single adult cell, which at the time was groundbreaking and showed that cloning a complex mammal was actually possible. Even though Dolly only lived for about six years, her birth changed the way scientists thought about genetics and sparked huge discussions about science, ethics, and the future of cloning. Seeing her there on display was both surreal and kind of inspiring, since she’s such an iconic part of modern science. But the museum wasn’t just about science, it also gave us insights into Scottish history and id...

Day 11 (September 24, 2025): North Berwick

Bild
At the Seabird Center in North Berwick                     (by Louisa, Malvina, Florian) Our day started early…Because (drumroll please) we had a birthday girl to celebrate. Obviously, we had to do this at 12 o’clock sharp. Yippee :-) Then, after a short night, our train left at 8.30 for North Berwick at the coast, more exactly, the Seabird Center. There we were greeted by Charlotte (not the one from our class and also not the French Assistant Charlotte from our school. A completely new Charlotte!) She was leading our workshop at the Center.   We started out with an introduction and then shortly went on to the real business: the rock pooling. For the ones that don’t know what this is (probably all of you lol), it is a practice where you wander around the beach during low tide, looking for small sea creatures, with a bucket in hand. We learned many things such as how to pick up a crab, why wellies are important to bring on a Scotland...

Day 10 (September 23, 2025): Edinburgh

Hello Edinburgh!        (By Reva, Abigail and Charlotte) We’ve reached the final destination for our trip to Scotland: welcome to Edinburgh!! The feeling of being clean we had after a lengthy rain shower in our new apartments was incomparable. Refreshed and full of energy our day began with a walk to Calton Hill where we were astonished by the magnificent view of the city and of the visible separation between the old and new town.  Ms Hänggi and Ms Ruf told us some great facts about the location and on we went to Edinburgh castle. The tourists were quite easy to spot here, and, amidst a swarm of them, the first presentation of the day took place. Following that, the second group introduced us to Victoria Street, also known as the street that inspired the famous “Diagon Alley” from Harry Potter. After about one and a half hours that we got to spend on our own - exploring the city centre, finding adorable places to grab some lunch - we met again. The day continued...

Day 9 (September 22, 2025): From Oban to Edinburgh

Bild
Welcome to Edinburgh (by Lina, Maryam and Kweenie) This morning, we had some free time in Oban, before leaving for Edinburgh. The day started with some last-minute packing in the hostel, as everyone tried to get their suitcases ready. Just when things were already a bit hectic, one group’s room door broke :( The receptionist had to come and fix it; therefore, they had a little less time to pack than the rest of us. It caused a bit of chaos, but luckily everything worked out in the end. While some of us went to cafés to enjoy breakfast, others decided to go last-minute shopping in second-hand or souvenir shops. Soon after, we met at the train station and boarded our first train back to Glasgow. The ride, which took over 3 hours, gave us some time to relax and enjoy the scenery. As usual, we kept ourselves busy eating, sleeping and repeating :)   After switching trains, the second ride from Glasgow to Edinburgh was much shorter (less than an hour). Since it was a public tra...
